The Chef Pillai Times is a concept close to Chef Pillai’s heart.
Grown up around the pristine lakeshore banks of Asthamudi, Kollam, like all Keralites the newpaper used to be the connection to the world outside for him and his family. All the pictures of current events, disasters, heroes, sports champions, movies, cartoons, politics, political cartoons…the newspaper had it all well packaged to give the reader the happenings all around.
When children left for school, their school lunches were cooked by mothers or grandmothers and loving packed in a banana leaf and then later wrapped the leaf with yesterday’s copy of the daily newspaper.
When he launched his POTHI CHORU concept in Bengaluru in his first restaurant, he thought why not wrap it in a newspaper like packaging.
And CHEF PILLAI TIMES was born.
The first of the Pothi Chorus went out wrapped up in a copy of Chef Pillai Times to keep up with the ‘Nostalgic Authenticity’ of the Pothi Choru.
Chef Pillai Times went digital with the launch of Chef Pillai’s website chefpillai.com>
Even though digital it kept to the classic design and layout of a tabloid or newspaper.
It is very much a part of the Chef Pillai experience. Like the flavours of his food, the Chef Pillai Times is also a friendly, neigbourhood newsletter.
It highlights the world of Chef Pillai – his food, projects, recipes, travels and readable snippets, all in the exciting world of food.
